Indeed, I Cannot

“The word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, ‘I will not mention him or speak any more in his name,’ his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.'” (Jeremiah 20:8–9, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Speaking the Lord’s word brought “insult and reproach” to Jeremiah. And so, it will to anyone who remains faithful to the God’s word. Especially in this post-Christian age, and “and all the more as [we] see the Day approaching.

As we move closer to that day, the “post-Christian society [will move] from assuming Christian values to ignoring them, to resenting them, to repressing them, and eventually to persecuting them. What was once Christian and is now post-Christian will eventually become anti-Christian.” (gotquestions.org/post – Christian). Me thinks we are closer than we realize. A day when it will be dangerous to “mention Him or speak any more in His name.”

My Advice – Jesus instructed His disciples, “do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Matthew 10:19–20, NIV 1984). Perhaps it will be like that for us, and like it was for Jeremiah. “His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” May it be so.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
