SERVANTS IDENTIFIED – Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben 12,000, from the tribe of Gad 12,000, from the tribe of Asher 12,000, from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000, from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000, from the tribe of Simeon 12,000, from the tribe of Levi 12,000, from the tribe of Issachar 12,000, from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000, from the tribe of Joseph 12,000, from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000. (Revelation 7:4-8)
Background – The Bible contains several lists of the tribes in the Old Testament. (Genesis 35:22; 46:8, 49, Exodus. 1:1, Numbers 1:2; 13:4, 26:34, Deuteronomy 27:11; 33:6, Joshua 13–22, Judges 5, 1 Chronicles 2–8; 12:24; 27:16, Ezekiel 48) and they are given in various orders.(1) Figure 14.2 compares Continue reading “Servants Identified”
Matthew 18:2-4 – He called a little child and had him stand among them. And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (NIV 1984)
1 Corinthians 13:11 – When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. (NIV 1984)
My Musings – There is a world of difference between becoming like a little child (humble, innocent, trusting), and being childish (petty, pouty, immature). We should certainly grow-up to the “full-measure” while retaining (or is it regaining) our humility, innocence and ability to trust God fully – keeping a bit of the child in the heart or the man (or woman).
My Advice – Be a child, but don’t be childish.
INTRODUCTION – YOU MEAN IT MAY NOT BE WRONG…
If It Isn’t Clear? – I go even further back than that. Ten years after The Great War, as we used to call it. Before we knew enough to number them. You miss that kind of action, sir? No, I miss that kind of clarity. (Wabash/Houseman and Higgins/Robertson – Three Days of the Condor)
If You Don’t Get Caught? – Boy, what is it with you people? You think not getting caught in a lie is the same thing as telling the truth? (Turner/Redford – Three Days of the Condor)
If It’s A Gray Area? – You are such a boy scout. You see everything in black and white. No, no, no! Not black and white Ritter, right and wrong! (Ritter and Ryan/Ford – Clear and Present Danger)
If… – What are some other ways that we Continue reading “Whatever Happened to Right & Wrong?”
Job 21:22 – “Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since He judges even the highest?” (NIV 1978)
My Musings – We live in a time where the wisdom of God is challenged on every front. Mankind has the audacity to presume that God has it wrong and they have it right. There is no pleasure in knowing that they will find out the truth someday.
My Advice – Do not follow the wisdom of the world. You will know in your heart what the truth of the matter is because the Holy Spirit lives in you. Follow your heart.
SERVANTS SEALED – Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” (Revelation 7:2-3)
Angel from The East –This is another angel that appears to be distinct from the four already mentioned,(1) because he calls out to them. Some regard this other “angel” as the Holy Spirit, since apart from apocalyptic symbolism it is the Holy Spirit that Continue reading “The Servants Are Sealed”
Job 21:7 – “Why do the wicked live on, growing old and increasing in power?”
My Musings – It seems like the good die young and the evil grow old. The good grow weaker with less influence in the world and the evil gain more power and exert greater influence. If this life was all there were, this would be very disheartening. But compared to eternity it is nothing.
My Advice – Do not be dismayed when you see evil prevail. It will not always be so. God is just. In the end, justice will prevail and all wrongs made right.
A BRIEF INTERMISSION – After this. (Revelation 7:1a)
After the sixth seal, and before discussing the opening of the seventh seal (Revelation 8:1), John pauses to relate two other visions in Revelation 7. These two visions are the sealing of the servants of God (Revelation 7:1–8),(1) and the great multitude before the throne (Revelation 7:9–17). “After this” may mean that this vision follows the vision of the sixth seal, not necessarily that the events described in this vision follow the sixth seal.(2)
Why the pause? Continue reading “After This, I Saw”
