Hidden from the “Wise”

Matthew 11:25At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” (NIV 1978)

My Musings – God chooses to reveal Himself through faith and trust rather than by wisdom and learning. He has much more to do with the heart than he does with the mind.

My Advice – Be careful that you do not put too much faith into your education and in the “wisdom” of the world. In matters of faith, it is safer to remember the things that you put your trust in when you were a child than the things you learn from scholars and scientists.

Treasures of the Heart

Matthew 6:19 – “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in a steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” (NIV 1978)

My Musing – Life is about priorities. If our priorities are fame and fortune, our hearts will be motivated by greed and pride. If our priorities are the things of God, them we will be motivated by satisfaction and humility.

My Advice – Hold on loosely to the things of this world. Its treasures, fame and accomplishments do not last and can be lost in a heartbeat. Seek to acquire real wealth and recognition. The things you do for God and the things you do to build a Godly character will last forever and cannot be lost.

A Simple Yes or No Should Do

Matthew 5:33-37 – “Again, you have it heard it was said to the people long ago, ‘do not break your oath, but keep oaths you have made to the Lord.’ But I tell you do not swear at all, either by heaven, or by the earth; or by Jerusalem. And do not swear by your head. Simply let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘no,’ ‘no’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. (NIV 1978)

My Musings – What an incredible testimony it would be if others did not require an oath from us. That they would be merely satisfied by a simple yes or no from us. There are few people with that kind of integrity and that inspires that kind of trust.

My Advice – Be a man of your word. Someone who others can rely on to always keep his word.

Proven by Love

John 13:35 – “All men will know that you are My disciples if you love one another.” (NIV 1978)

My Musing – Love. Little else is as captivating or inspiring as love. It is, perhaps, one of the most sought after and motivating experiences that anyone can have. As a subject matter it permeates movies, songs, books, television and advertising. Yet Continue reading “Proven by Love”

Proclamation of the Angel

PROCLAMATION OF THE ANGELAfter this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted: “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.” (Revelation 18:1-3)

When the Proclamation is Given – The final verses of Revelation 17 (before) warn of Babylon’s impending fall. Revelation 18 (after) gives the details of its destruction. While John received visions (before) that would happen in the future (after), he wrote down what he saw after seeing the vision. Thus, Continue reading “Proclamation of the Angel”

Test Me

Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” (NIV 1978)

My Musings – God will indeed bless if we do this, but we must make sure that our motive in doing so is not to obtain the blessing. We must make sure we want to contribute, but have been reluctant to do so because of our own needs. Then it becomes a measure of our faith, not our greed. God blesses faith, not selfishness or greed.

My Advice – Your mother and I have seen this in our own lives. My career did not really take off financially until we began tithing. Since then God has blessed so that we have lacked nothing we needed, yet we are not consumed by greed to get more. As you start your career, you may feel you do not make enough to tithe. Do it anyway and get ready to be amazed at how God stretches the resources.

Useless Fires

Malachi 1:6-10 – How have we despised Your name? How have we defiled You? “”When you sacrifice blind, crippled or diseased animals. Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar!” (NIV 1978)

My Musings – God often gets our leftovers, because we keep the best for ourselves. We should ask ourselves where would we be if He had not given His best for us?

My Advice – God sacrificed His best for you – His Son. Make sure He doesn’t just get the leftovers of your life. Attend Church regularly, not just if you have time. Support God’s work with your money, not just if you have something leftover.
