The Death of Mankind

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” (Genesis 2:16–17, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Created in innocence, there was only one command. “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” And as we’ve discovered many times over since then, even if there is one thing we are not to have or do, that is the one thing we want. So, “when the woman [Eve] saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband [Adam], who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3:6, NIV 1984). Another thing we discovered, when we do something wrong, it seems better if we are not the only one doing wrong.

Yes, it’s true they were tempted by the devil (in the guise of a serpent). But the decision to disobey that one command was theirs. It is important to note that Eve (and Adam who was with her) was close enough to see “that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom.” Which points out something that is very important. If we don’t want to “eat the apple,” don’t hang around the “tree.”

My Advice – But they did. And it would not have been any different if it was us in the garden. Because we ratify the choice they made every time we fall to sin. So, stay away from the “tree!”
