Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. (Colossians 2:8, NLT 2015).
My Musings – This is from Paul’s letter, written to the church in Colossae somewhere between A.D. 60-64. He may as well be writing to any church today. Who says that the Bible is no longer relevant?
We are a culture that is increasingly being taken with “empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense.” We must be very careful when our source is other “than from Christ.” Like the men of Athens, we spend way too much “time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas,” (Acts 17:21, NIV 1984), that all too often are contrary to the “God-breathed” Word of God. And before we know it, we have been taken captive by “human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world.”
My Advice – “My brothers [and sisters], this should not be…can a grapevine [human thinking] bear figs [spiritual fruit]? Neither can a salt spring [spiritual powers of this world] produce fresh [living] water.” (James 3:10–12, NIV 1984). Test the spirits. Challenge human thinking. “If we are not deliberately thinking about our culture and our context, we will be conformed to it without ever knowing.” (Timothy Heller).

Hi Steve, couldn’t agree more. And the trickle has become a torrent and many there be that are swept away. There is but one truth, one way and one life. You have no idea how much I appreciate your witness. Thank you brother. Love in Christ – Bruce
