A Shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him [Jesus, the Messiah]— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord— and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. My Musings – “The crowds were amazed at His [Jesus] teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.” (Matthew 7:28–29, NIV 1984). They would not have been amazed if they knew who He was – the promised Messiah. One on whom the “Spirit of the Lord” rested. “John gave this testimony: ‘I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and [rested] on Him.'” (John 1:32, NIV 1984).
If they did know who He was, they would not have been “amazed” that His teaching was “not as their teachers of the law.” For He had “the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.” It cannot get more authoritative than that.
My Advice – If you pay attention to nothing else in the Bible (although all of it is authoritative), pay attention to His teaching. There is no way He could be merely a great moral teacher. For He was speaking the very words of the Father. “I do nothing on My own but speak just what the Father has taught Me. The One who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone.” (John 8:28–29, NIV 1984).
