Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. My Musings – “The human mind is a complex organ with the wonderful power of enabling man to find reasons for continuing to believe whatever it is that he wants to believe.” (Voltaire). I suspect that there is little I have in common with Voltaire’s worldview. However, when I think of today’s culture, I have to agree with this quote of his. At the same time, I must concede that many that are under the influence of today’s culture could just as easily think the same way about me. I think this would be the case of those with opposing views on just about any subject. But by definition, those with opposing views cannot both be right.
My Advice – We can “give the reason for the hope that [we] have.” Often those we give our reasoning to will “find reasons for continuing to believe whatever it is that [they want] to believe.” Do not be surprised if they also “speak maliciously against” us. Let’s just make sure we do not also give them a reason to not “be ashamed of their slander.”
