Making or Taking a Name?

The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth. (Genesis 9:18–19, NIV 1984).

My Musings – God had commanded them “be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it,” (Genesis 9:7, NIV 1984). As people with a common ancestry and “one language and a common speech,” (Genesis 11:1, NIV 1984), they began to advance too quickly. Building “a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4, NIV 1984).

As we have witnessed, as people multiply and civilizations advance, making names for themselves, conflict and corruption also advances. God did two things to slow things down and delay that for a time when once again “every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.” (Genesis 6:5, NIV 1984).

Confused their language. “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” (Genesis 11:6–7, NIV 1984).

Scattered over the earth. “So, the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth.” (Genesis 11:8, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Be careful that “[making] a name for ourselves” does not rob God of the glory He is owed. That building a life by our own good deeds that “reaches to the heavens” will not gain us entry into Heaven. Take the name of Christ (Christian) and you will reach Heaven.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
