When I See the Blood

“Take some of the blood [of the slain lambs] and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night…eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.” (Exodus 12:7-8, 11–13, NIV 1984).

My Musings “The Lord [made] a [most significant] distinction between Egypt and Israel,” (Ex 11:7, NIV 1984), when He passed over those homes marked with the blood of the lamb on the sides and tops of their doorframes. By this blood the firstborn of these households were spared God’s judgement. Passover is commemorated annually by the Jews as they look back to remember God delivering them from their bondage by the Egyptians and the redemption of their firstborn.

It is also a foreshadowing of Christ’s death on the cross during Passover centuries later. “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that [we are] redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to [us] from [our] forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” (1 Peter 1:17–19, NIV 1984).

Christians also look back to remember God delivering them from their bondage to sin. “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For whenever [we] eat this bread and drink this cup, [we] proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:23–26, NIV 1984).

My Advice – We have nothing to remember or proclaim if we are not covered by His blood. And we are not covered by His blood unless we receive Him and believe in His name.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
