The Day the Lord Saved Israel

That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. And when the Israelites saw the great power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant. (Exodus 14:30–31, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Quite a turnabout from the terror that led the Israelites to complain to Moses, “it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” (Exodus 14:12, NIV 1984). Better for the Egyptians.

As for the Israelites? “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.” (Exodus 14:21–22, NIV 1984). A miraculous display of God’s control the natural laws He created.

And the Egyptians? “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.” (Exodus 14:26–28, NIV 1984). A powerful force armed with chariots and horses were no match God.

My Advice“When the Israelites saw the great power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.” (Exodus 14:31, NIV 1984). Fear (profound respect that borders on fear) and trust (faith in the character, ability, strength, or truth of) God. Not a bad combination. Not bad advice.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
