They Did Not Remember

Thus, Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land enjoyed peace forty years. Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They…did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. (Judges 8:28, 32-34, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “During Gideon’s lifetime, the land enjoyed peace forty years.” However, “no sooner had Gideon diedthey…did not remember their God, who had rescued them.” Human (sinful) nature. We certainly remember (and cry out to) Him when we need Him. But when things are going well, particularly if it is for an extended period of time, we tend to forget Him and get caught up in “everything [of] the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of [our] eyes and the boasting of what [we have] and [do].” (1 John 2:16, NIV 1984).

Thank God, it never works the other way around. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” (Isaiah 49;15-16, NIV 1984).

My Advice“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is [the] gospel.” (2 Timothy 2:8, NIV 1984). The Gospel. The ultimate deliverance.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
