Appoint a King to Lead Us

Samuel continued as judge over Israel all the days of his life. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges for Israel. But his sons did not walk in his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice. So, all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel…They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” (1 Samuel 7:15, 8:1, 3-5, NIV 1984).

My Musings – So, Samuel’s sons followed in the footsteps of Eli’s sons. “They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.” It is not clear if this happened before or after “he appointed his sons as judges for Israel.” Nevertheless, Samuel was not pleased with the elders’ request.

“The Lord told [Samuel]: ‘Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. Listen to them and give them a king. I will send you a man [Saul] from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him leader over my people Israel; he will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. ‘” (1 Samuel 8:7, 22, 9:16, NIV 1984).

“Samuel said to all the people, ‘Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.’ Then the people shouted, ‘Long live the king!'” (1 Samuel, 10:24, NIV 1984). And so, the age of the judges came to an end.

My Advice“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. (Romans 13:1-2, NIV 1984). But sometimes, the governing authorities become corrupt. In that case, “we must obey God rather than men!” (Acts 5:29, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
