The Highest Heaven Cannot Contain You

The glory of the Lord filled his temple. Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever. But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” (1 Kings 8:11-13, 27, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Indeed. Many years later, “in the year that King Uzziah died, [the prophet Isaiah] saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs…calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.'” (Isaiah 6:1-3, NIV 1984). And in the book of Jeremiah, “this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?'” (Jeremiah 23:16, 24, NIV 1984). For, “[He] alone [is] the Lord. [He] made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. [He gives] life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship [Him]. (Nehemiah 9:6, NIV 1984).

Wow! “How much less this temple.” Until. “You [Mary] will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:31-33, NIV 1984). And then to the shepherds keeping watch over their flocks, “today in the town of David [Bethlehem] a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:11-12, NIV 1984). Condescending from the “highest heaven” to a manager “because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7, NIV 1984). Again, no room.

My Advice – The real question to be asked? Is there room in your heart for Him? The answer? Yes, but only if you invite Him in. “For this reason, I [constantly] kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith.” Ephesians 3:14-17, NIV 1984). For while “the highest heaven cannot contain” Him, your heart can. Let Him in.
