Above the Heavens, Over All the Earth

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. (Psalm 57:11, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Exalted. Elevated in rank, power, or character. In God’s case, not “or” but “and.” Glory. Very great praise, honor, or distinction bestowed by common consent. Once again, “and” not “or.” Cannot argue with any of this. Except for maybe “bestowed by common consent.” Becoming less common with each passing day.

What’s interesting is that the psalmist uses “be” rather than “is.” In reality, He “is,” [He would say IAM] but not by common consent. That’s what makes the use of “be” so interesting. Be, is the present subjunctive tense of the verb, which conveys a sense of either a present or future hypothetical (imagined, but not necessarily true). The psalmist, and we, can only imagine, because it is presently not true by common consent.

My Advice – Lend your voice to those who consent now. “For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'” (Romans 14:10-11, NIV 1984). Then, it will not be a hypothetical. Then all will acknowledge that He “[is] exalted…above the heavens,” that His “glory [is] over all the earth.” Then, be will become is. It really “was” all along, just not by common consent. He never needed anyone’s consent, although He desired it. That’s why He sent His Son. But if we wait until then to consent, it will be too late to alter our eternal state. It doesn’t have to “be” that way.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
