My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. (Proverbs 2:1-5, 9, NIV 1984).
My Musings – The problem with mankind is that it prefers to “accept [His] words” only if they are acceptable to it. “Turning [its] ear” to the wisdom of the world as opposed to the wisdom of the Word. Searching for “loopholes” rather than the “hidden treasure” that will allow it to “find the knowledge of God.” No wonder that its “[understanding] of what is right and just and fair” is so far off the mark. Eyes to see but doesn’t see it. Ears to hear but doesn’t hear it. Minds full of carnal knowledge, but empty of wisdom and understanding.
My Advice – The moral compass of the world does not point to true north. With Satan being the prince of the world, as it now stands (fallen), we would not expect it to be. But that is no excuse for the people of faith to stray off course. To not accept, store up, turn our ear to, apply our hearts, call out and look for the knowledge of God. And having done all that, with gentleness and respect, to share it with those lacking that knowledge and direction. Because, unlike their compass, ours is not broken. And a broken compass will never lead one in the direction of home.
So, “do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV 1984, NIV). If you do this, then “his good, pleasing and perfect will” will always point to “what is right and just and fair.” Found only in Jesus. And that is what you call “true north.”
