Show Restraint

Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. (Proverbs 23:4–5, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The trouble with our possessions, is that they frequently end up possessing us. “I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owner, or wealth lost through some misfortune. Naked a man comes from his mother’s womb, and as he comes, so he departs. He takes nothing from his labor that he can carry in his hand. As a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gain, since he toils for the wind? (Ecclesiastes 5:13-16, NIV 1984).

All who wear themselves “out to get rich” end up toiling “for the wind.” Try as we might to “carry in [our] hand” all the material possession we can accumulate and not let go, will find that even the grip of death cannot hold onto them. “So, [we] depart,” and “they are gone.”

My Advice“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19–21, NIV 1984).

Only what we do for the Lord will be stored up in Heaven and survive the grave. Are we being wise in what we treasure in our heart? “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” – Jim Elliot. He is a fool who clings to what he cannot keep, only to lose what he could have gained. Don’t make the fool’s choice.
