Speak Up

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:8–9, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Some cannot speak for themselves. Still others, though they speak, go unheard and neglected. These are the ones the world see as foolish, weak, lowly and despised. These are the ones that Jesus reached out to. Not the ones who needed no one to speak for them, or at least they thought so. “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are. (1 Corinthians 1:27–28, NIV 1984).

In doing so, He offered them the greatest right of all. “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12–13, NIV 1984). Jesus came to “speak up” for them. It’s not that He does not speak up for wise, strong and the people that are. It’s just that so many of them don’t feel a need for Him. How sad.

My Advice – We cannot give to others what Christ offers them. But we can speak up for them. Speak to them. Especially those who cannot speak up for themselves, or who otherwise go unheard. “For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes, and you clothed me, I was sick, and you looked after me, I was in prison, and you came to visit me.” (Matthew 25:35–36, NIV 1984). Let’s show them the love of Christ. The love of One who will hear them.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
