Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek help from the Lord. (Isaiah 31:1, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Alliances can be helpful to a nation, as can the strength of their defense. But the enemy can have greater alliances and a stronger military. Even if not, the things that nations rely on to feel secure can end up being a paper tiger, having the appearance of strength or power but in reality, is weak or ineffectual. But if “[their] help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8, NIV 1984), they have nothing to fear.
My Advice – There is not much that we as individuals can do ensure that our nation is secure (except prayer, of course), especially if its source of security is misplaced. Even if its motto happens to be “in God we trust.” It’s only words if it “[does] not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek help from the Lord.“
But a greater danger to us as individuals is that we face a “roaring lion” as a paper tiger. So, “be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 5:8–11, NIV 1984).
