Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions. (Ecclesiastes 7:10, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Been hearing this question a lot these days. I have asked it myself many times over. Why is it not wise? Because it changes nothing. What we should be asking is, “what can I do to make things just a little better?” We have arrived from “the old days” that were “better” to “these” days that are worse in small steps. Although the steps are getting larger and faster. But who’s to say we can’t get back a little of what was “better” in “the old days” in small steps? Over time, those steps might just get larger and faster too.
My Advice – Even if our collective small steps end up making very little difference at all, that does not mean that we should not make the effort. For, “anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” (James 4:17, NIV 1984). God will reward us for being “good and faithful” even if we are not “good and successful.” And it is clearly not “good” to be unfaithful by not doing “the good he [knows he] ought to do.”
