Say to them, this is what the Lord says: “Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush.” (Jeremiah 8:4, 12, NIV 1984).
My Musings – When I was young, certain behavior was considered loathsome and shameful. Enough to make people blush. Today, these same behaviors are often celebrated. It cannot be both. Either it was shameful then and still is, or we had it wrong in the past and we are more enlightened today. Our judgment was either wrong then or now. There is no other way to look at it.
My Advice – A paradigm shift is when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way. The thing itself did not change, just the way of looking at it.
So, how do we judge what is right?
Christ’s Words – “There is a judge for the one who rejects me [Jesus] and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.” (John 12:48, NIV 1984).
All Scripture – But not just the words He spoke during His earthly ministry. For, “all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV 1984).
No Private Interpretation – “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20–21, NIV 1984).
Let these three principles be your guide in judging what is loathsome (sinful) and what is wholesome (righteous), and you will not be condemned “at the last day.“
