This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord. He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:5–8, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life.”(Deuteronomy 30:19, NIV 1984). Blessings and life, or curses and death. But this is not just about a final life or death struggle. It is about our eternal destiny. Eternal life in Heaven with God forever, or eternal death in hell separated from God forever.
Curse – When we trust in anything or anyone other than the Lord, we are turning away from God. We will euphemistically “dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.” Hell. No one who dwells there lives. They suffer eternal death.
Blessing – But those who place their trust and confidence (faith) in God “will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream…and never fails to bear fruit.” Heaven. Those who dwell there “does not fear” and “has no worries.” They enjoy eternal life.
My Advice – “Do not let your hearts be troubled [fears and worries]. Trust in God; trust [confidence] also in me.” (John 14:1, NIV 1984). Do not “[turn] away from the Lord.” Turn to Him and “choose life.“
