Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, O Lord, look [on us]…Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see…We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God. (Daniel 9:17–19, NIV 1984).
My Musings – The above passage, adapted from Daniel’s prayer, is model of humility. If anyone is like me, they are more likely to exclaim something like “God, why don’t you do something?!” As if we were righteous and deserving and He was obligated and uncaring. As if He was distant and not listening or blind to the situation. Fortunately, for us, He is indeed a God of “great mercy.” When what we are more deserving of is a reply like, “who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge?” (Job 38:2, NIV 1984).
My Advice – “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16, NIV 1984). Confident in His mercy and grace. Not confident of our righteousness or entitlement. Even when the answer seems slow in coming or not what we felt we needed. He will most certainly “hear and act for [His] sake,” but that does not mean He is not hearing and acting for our sake as well.
