Look on Me

“I [the LORD] will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. On that day the weeping in Jerusalem will be great.” (Zechariah 12:10–11, NIV).

My Musings – To this day, by and large, the people chosen by God refuse to accept that Jesus was and is the promised Messiah. “The Lord did not set his affection on [them] and choose [them] because [they] were more numerous than other peoples, for [they] were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved [them] and kept the oath He swore to [their] forefathers [Abraham, Isaac and Jacob]. (Deuteronomy 7:7–8, NIV 1984). They are, in effect, oath breakers. Yet “did God reject his people? By no means! At the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.” (Romans 11:1, 5, NIV 1984).

But what about the rest, those who make up the “by and large?” “Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! If they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted [back] in, for God is able to graft them in again. They are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable (Romans 11:11, 23, 28–29, NIV 1984). But like their father Abraham, “the promise comes by faith. Abraham in hope believed [and] it was credited to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:16, 22, NIV 1984).

My Advice – And it was “not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” (Romans 4:23–25, NIV 1984).

We must all look upon the one who was pierced. Our mourning will either lead us to repentance or regret. A day of great weeping for joy or in grief. A “spirit of grace and supplication,” or of “weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Let’s choose joy. In the meantime, lets pray for “the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” So that “all Israel will be saved.” (Romans 11:26, NIV 1984).
