The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head. (Obadiah 15).
My Musings – “All nations.” Corrupt nations are easy to recognize. Like people, recognized by their “fruits.” Easy to understand why “[their] deeds will return upon [their] own head.” But what about the nations where “God is on their side,” which has been the rallying cry of many “good” nations. But perhaps Abraham Lincoln had it right when asked if he believed God was on his side. “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side,” he replied, “my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”
“Let the nations be roused; let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there I will sit to judge all the nations on every side.” (Joel 3:12, NIV 1984). Note, “on every side.”
My Advice – “They gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon [the Valley of Jehosophat]. Then I saw the beast [and with him the false prophet] and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh. (Revelation 16:16, 19a, 20-21, NIV 1984).
In the end, no nation will “be on God’s side.” Until that day, we as individuals have very little sway on which side our particular nation will be. But we can be on the side of His Kingdom. One that is not of this world. So, why wonder if, or hopefully claim that God is on our side. Rather, make every effort to “be on God’s side.” Follow the Son.
