Do Not Be Afraid

The [disciples] were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Mathew 8:27, NIV 1984).

My Musings – While Jesus and His disciples were crossing a lake in a boat, Jesus fell asleep. After a furious storm suddenly erupted “the disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!'” (Matthew 8:25, NIV 1984). It must have been quite a storm to raise such alarm in a group that included some pretty seasoned fishermen who had undoubtedly encountered some fairly severe storms in their time. But Jesus calmly “got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” (Matthew 8:26, NIV 1984).

My Advice“O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.” (Psalm 65:5, 7, NIV 1984).What kind of man is this?” No ordinary man, that’s for sure. God incarnate. For no one else has the power and authority that “even the winds and the waves obey Him.

But His power and authority does not end there. “Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:26–27, NIV 1984). Only He has the ability to calm the storms in our lives that would otherwise “drown” us. All we must do is cry out “‘Lord, save us!

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
