When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” (Matthew 21:10–11, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Jesus’ brothers had said to Him earlier, “no one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” (John 7:3–4, NIV 1984). But they needn’t have bothered. “The whole city was stirred” because of the things He had been doing. Clearly, He was already a “public figure.“
The disciples “brought [a] donkey and [a] colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!'” (Matthew 21:7–9, NIV 1984).
This must have been quite a spectacle, and those who were well-versed in the Scriptures must have pondered the Old Testament prophecy. “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9, NIV 1984). Yet before the week was out, “blessed is He” would become “crucify Him!“
My Advice – Today, we are asked the same question. “Who is this?” How we respond will determine whether or not we’ll be “having salvation.” Our “King comes to [us].” Let’s receive Him with rejoicing.
