But [We] Were Not Willing?

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” (Matthew 23:37, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Unrequited love. Love that is not reciprocated. We think we understand the heartbreak in human terms, but who can even begin to imagine the heartache of the Creator when it is not returned by the created? Not because the beloved were unaware, but because they were “unwilling. “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” (John 1:10–11, NIV 1984).

My Advice – But that is not the end of the story. “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12, NIV 1984). We must believe in Him. That He died to save us. We must receive Him. In so doing, we return the love He longs for. We are not unaware. Must we also be unwilling?

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
