It Will Not Return to Me Empty

“Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.” (Mark 4:14–21, NIV 1984).

My Musings – This is Jesus’ explanation of the Parable of the Sower given to HIs disciples. Not all seed that is sown will grow. But “seed” that falls on fertile soil will grow and produce despite Satan’s opposition, trouble or persecution, worries, deceitfulness, or worldly desires. Such seed “is strong [and] does not wither, [its] deep roots are not reached by the frost.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring).

My Advice – This is what happens to seed sown in good soil. “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11, NIV 1984). Which soil are we?

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
