According to His Power

[Jesus] answered, “You give them something to eat.” (Mark 6:37, NIV 1984).

My Musings – By this time in HIs ministry, the crowds were following Jesus everywhere, even when He and HIs disciples retreated to remote places to be alone. Still Jesus took time to minister to the crowds.

On this particular occasion, He taught until late in the day. “So, his disciples came to him. ‘This is a remote place,’ they said, ‘and it’s already very late. Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.'” (Mark 6:35–36, NIV).

As noted in the above text, Jesus had other plans. To feed the crowd of five thousand men (plus women and children), with the only resources they had – five loaves of bread and two fish. Under ordinary circumstances, not even enough to feed Jesus and the twelve. But, “taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, [Jesus] gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.” (Mark 6:41–43, NIV 1984).

This was no ordinary circumstance, and this was no ordinary man giving the command.

My Advice – God may call us to do things that seem far beyond our ability and resources to complete. At such times, and it will likely be hard to do, our focus should not be on the seemingly impossible challenge, but upon “Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20, NIV 1984).

Like Abraham, we must have faith. “Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ And the two of them went on together.” (Genesis 22:6–8, NIV 1984).

If we are sure that it is God’s command, we just have to “[go] on together.” For, “God Himself will provide.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
