Recognized By Its Own Fruit

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:43–45, NIV 1984).

My Musings – If you see a person that claims to be a Christian, but who habitually, without genuine repentance, “bears bad fruit,” you can rest assured that person is not what they claim to be.

Sometimes bad trees have the appearance of good fruit, “having a form of godliness,” (2 Timothy 3:5, NIV 1984), but without the regenerative power of the cross. “Never able to acknowledge the truth.” (2 Timothy 3:7, NIV 1984). Works (fruit), without saving faith (good tree), is in reality fruitless. “He [God] looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it?” (Isaiah 5:2, 4, NIV 1984).”

My Advice – What, indeed. He sent His only Son to die, so that believing in Him we might bear good fruit to the glory of God. Be a good tree, bear good fruit.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
