Who Is This?

In fear and amazement [the disciples] asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” (Luek 8:25, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Weariness having overtaken Him, Jesus fell asleep in the boat as they made their way across the lake. “A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we’re going to drown!’ He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.” (Luke 8:23–24. NIV 1984).

It must have been a particularly violent storm to frighten even the seasoned fisherman who were among the disciples (James, John, Peter and Andrew). So, why wouldn’t they be amazed that He was able to calm the storm? “Tell me, if you understand. Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?” (Job 38:4, 8–11, NIV 1984).

My Advice“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:3, NIV 1984). On the other hand, why should we be amazed that He who “made [everything] that has been made” would be able to have command over what He had made? He is not like man, who often causes things to happen, but lack the ability to control them. For we do not “have an arm like God’s.” (Job 40:9, NIV 1984). And yet, we cannot help but be amazed at “things too wonderful for [us] to know.” (Job 42:3, NIV 1984).

Who is this?” A question we must all answer one way or another.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
