Better Than Sacrifice

The rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:60–62, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Peter had boldly claimed, “even if all fall away on account of you, I never will. Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (Matthew 26:33, 35, NIV 1984). He did, three times.

It’s easy for us to come down hard on Peter for disowning Jesus. But every time we give in to sin, are we not doing the same thing? And every time we do, there is no escaping it. He is looking straight at us.

My Advice – Peter was forgiven. And we can be too. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8–9, NIV 1984). But wouldn’t it be so much better if we did not give in to sin in the first place? Anyone who has felt the hand of discipline knows this is true. “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22, NIV 1984).
