More Than All the Others

Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “I tell you the truth,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:1–4, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The rich, giving “out of their wealth,” must have seemed extravagant to most observers. But the cost to them was no real sacrifice. The poor widow, having no excess and giving “all she had to live on,” was a greater cost than she could really afford. Yet, she held nothing back. A huge sacrifice.

Jesus took notice of both, but only one was commended. “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Our attitude should be the same as David’s. “I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” (2 Samuel 24:24, NIV 1984).
