Come and See

“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. (John 1:46, NIV 1984).

My Musings – What a great response from Phillip. Convinced that he had met the long-awaited Messiah, “we have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph,” (John 1:45, NIV 1984), he went looking for Nathanael to share the good news.

We could learn a thing or two from Phillip. He didn’t argue his point. or belittle Nathanael for his skepticism. He merely challenged Nathanael to come and see for himself. The result, “Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.'” (John 1:49, NIV 198). I truly believe that anyone who diligently “comes to see” with an open mind will have the same reaction.

My Advice“Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man’s behalf!” (Psalm 66:5, NIV 1984). What could be more awesome than providing grace through Jesus Christ, to pay for our sins? So that we may have eternal life.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
