The Gospel That Has Come to You

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in Him. (John 2:11–12, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “He turned the water into wine. In the little Cana town, the word went all around that He turned the water into wine,” from a song written by Johnny Cash. At a wedding in Cana of Galilee. “Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding.” (John 2:1–2, NIV 1984).

But they ran out of wine. “Jesus’ mother said to Him, They have no more wine.’ ‘Dear woman, why do you involve me?’ Jesus replied. ‘My time has not yet come.'” (John 2:3–4, NIV 1984). She did not directly ask for a miracle. She merely stated a need. Not a huge need. Mostly embarrassment for the parents of the bride. But Mary had faith in what He was capable of. “Do whatever He tells you,” (John 2:5, NIV 1984), Mary told the servants.

We are not told why Jesus turned the water into wine. Perhaps because only the servants, His disciples and His mother knew. “And His disciples put their faith in Him.” (John 2:11, NIV 1984). Their previous proclamations, “we have found the Messiah” (John 1:41, NIV 1984), and “you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel,” (John 1:49, NIV), were apparently based on mere hopefulness, that had not yet sprung into full-fledged faith.

My Advice “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” (Psalm 31:24, NIV 1984). For “faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you.” (Colossians 1:5–6, NIV 1984). It will not disappoint.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
