“He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:29–30, NIV 1984).
My Musings – As Jesus’ popularity increased, John the Baptist’s decreased. This might have been a problem for some people, but not John. Seeing Jesus being welcomed by the crowds led him to proclaim that his joy was “now complete.” He knew full well that “the bride belongs to the bridegroom [and he was merely] the friend who attends the bridegroom.” (John 3:29, NIV 1984).
As we strive to follow Christ, we should be like-minded. For, “when pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2, NIV 1984).
My Advice – The Apostle Paul said, “I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.” (Romans 12:3, NIV 1984). This echoes the words of John the Baptist, “a man can receive only what is given him from heaven.” (John 3:27, NIV 1984). Let’s receive “the measure of faith” that has been “given [us] from heaven,” in order that He becomes greater, and we become less as we strive to serve Him in true humility.
