From His Own Lips

At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. “If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You are right in saying I am.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.” (Luke 22:66–71, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “If you are the Christ, tell us.” Not because they wanted to believe, but because “the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. Yet they could not find any way to do it.” (Luke 19:47–48, NIV 1984). In the end, it was His own testimony that gave them the pretense to have Him killed.

Up to this point, they had been “unable to trap him in what he had said…in public.” (Luke 20:26, NIV 1984). But this time was different. Not because they were more clever in trying to trap Him. And not because Jesus had messed up. The time had come. After all, His response to them was pretty clever YOU are right in saying that I AM. (Emphasis added).

The nation, for the most part, along with most the religious leaders would reject His claim. But they would not thwart His plan. “No, it was for this very reason [He] came to this hour.” (John 12:27, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Yet “they still would not believe in him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: ‘Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?'” (John 12:37–38, NIV 1984). But what about us today? He told us who He was. Will we believe His message?
