For This Very Reason

“The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” (John 12:23-24, 27–28, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Jesus had to die in order to produce “many seeds.” He didn’t have to, but it was the only way. He could have asked the Father to “save [Him] from this hour.” But He didn’t. He did say, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. If it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” (Matthew 26:39, 42, NIV 1984). Clearly, if there was another way the cup would have passed. For, “with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, NIV 1984).

All things, of course, that are not contrary to or inconsistent with His Holy and righteous nature. And Sin must be dealt with one way or another. God’s will was “another.” To atone for mankind’s sin, through the sacrifice of HIs Son. “For this very reason [He] came.”

My Advice“Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 11:21, NIV 1984). We either bear it ourselves, or we accept Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. To reject it, is unforgiveable, for the cost to God was high. Accept it.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
