I Lay It Down

Knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:28–30, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The Romans did not take Jesus’ life, nor did the Jews. He was on that cross for us, but we did not take His life either. “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again.” (John 10:18, NIV 1984). He laid down His life for us. At that moment He knew that His work was finished, even before He would “take it up again.” And with this knowledge, “of [His] own accord,” “He bowed His head and gave up His Spirit.

My Advice“What man can live and not see death, or save himself from the power of the grave?” (Psalm 89:48, NIV 1984). He could have chosen to “not see death.” but He chose death to give us life after the grave. He “sealed the deal” by “[saving] Himself from the power of the grave.” This was the path He took to make a path for us to enter His Heavenly Kingdom.

What Man could do that? None other than the Godman, Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. And only His Gospel can deliver us from the grave. We must not believe any other claims that are contrary to this. They are all paths that lead straight to Hell. This is a truth that cannot be, must not be, sugarcoated.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
