On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. (Acts 8:1, 4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – As if often the case, “great persecution” only serves to advance the Gospel. Not everything in this life will be pleasant. Hardship of one kind or he other comes to many (most? all?) who seek to do God’s will and to serve His purpose. But this is not without fruit. For, “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, NIV 1984).
“In,” (experiencing a situation or condition). A small word that makes a big difference in the text. It does not say that all things will be good. It says, “in all things God works for the good.” The experience, situation or condition may be anything but good. Which might be a bit of a discouragement but for another small word. “All,” (every single one, with no exception). No matter how bad the experience, situation of condition may be, God will work it for the good.
My Advice – But not for everyone without exception. Only for “those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” If we are “in” Christ Jesus (the condition of being justified through faith in Him), that means us. “For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief [great persecution], he will show compassion [work for the good], so great is his unfailing love. For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.” (Lamentations 3:31–33, NIV 1984). So, preach the word, wherever He scatters us, whatever the situation. And watch Him work if for the good.
