Unless Someone Explains It To Me

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” (Acts 8:30–31, NIV 1984).

My Musings – I think many Christians spend way too much time condemning those who stand condemned already. “Whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:18, NIV 1984). Instead, we should be ready and willing to be the “someone [who] explains it to them” so they can be in a position to believe. “It” being the Gospel of Christ. For, “whoever believes in him is not condemned.” (John 3:17–18, NIV 1984).

My Advice“Pray that [we] may proclaim it clearly, as [we] should. [Being] wise in the way [we] act toward outsiders; [making] the most of every opportunity. Let [our] conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that [we] may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:3–6, NIV 1984).

Full of grace, seasoned with salt.” What a wise approach to those who do not understand what they are “reading.” “The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.” (Proverbs 13:14, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
