When I Find It Convenient

As Paul discoursed on righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” (Acts 24:25, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “You can’t handle the truth,” is a famous quote from the movie “A Few Good Men.” In the above text, Felix was afraid of the truth. Upon learning of a plot to kill Paul in Jerusalem the commander in charge of the Roman soldiers there had Paul transferred under heavy guard to Felix, the Governor in Caesarea, to hear Paul case. Felix’s motives were not entirely pure, “he was hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe, so he sent for him frequently and talked with him.” (Acts 24:26, NIV 1984). He really wasn’t interested in the truth afterall.

At the trial of Jesus, Pilate was confused about the truth. Felix was afraid of the truth. And way too many people “can’t handle the truth.” These are all tactics of Satan to prevent people from learning the truth. Which is quite simple. Jesus proclaimed, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” (John 14:6, NIV 1984). Elsewhere He said, “these words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” (John 14:24, NIV 1984).

My Advice – The irony is, most people claim to desperately want the truth, and are tied of sifting through the abundance of lies that cover the truth in darkness. Like the Psalmist, what people really need is for God to “send forth [His] light and [His] truth, [to] guide [them],” (Psalm 43:3, NIV 1984). And therein lies the greatest irony of all. He already did. “[Jesus] said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.'” (John 8:12, NIV 1984). The truth of the Gospel is a truth we can handle. A truth that we need not fear. A truth that is simple and not confusing at all. But we must come into the light to see the truth. Then we must believe the truth. There is no time more convenient than now.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
