Warn Those Who Are Idle

“And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The first Monday of my retirement. It went well. I do not plan to sit still (idle) in a room, and there is no chance that I will solve the world’s problems. Although no one seems to be doing that anyway. But I do not plan to start my day with no plans. While I thoroughly enjoyed my work, I learned early in my career that my job, my position, my title did not define me.

I have a consulting contract with the bank I retired from to work on various projects as requested. I am volunteering to help my church out more on “business” matters. I already oversee its finances. I plan to get back on a more regular blog schedule. It’s been a bit spotty since my wife passed. I have a lot of unread books (real books) to tackle. A more regular exercise routine (sounds like a New Year’s resolution). And some travel. With Eileen being blind we did not do a lot of travel. So, there are a lot of unseen sights to be seen while I am still healthy.

My Advice – The best advice I can give to anyone not yet retired is to learn the lesson that I did. You are not defined by your career. Find out what does define you and strive to continuously develop that. Otherwise, when you retire, there will be a big void with nothing to fill it.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
