Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. (1 Corinthians 3:1–3, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Paul addresses them as brothers, that is to say fellow believers. Yet at the same time, he addresses them as worldly. “Mere infants in Christ.” God does not give us a spiritual birth for us to remain as we were. For sure, we start off with “milk,” but we are intended to grow and mature in Christ and take on “solid food.”
The Word of God is “for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.” (Proverbs 1:2–5, NIV 1984).
My Advice – “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:13–14, NIV 1984). If we are mere infants, it is time to grow up. To become disciplined and prudent, “doing what is right and just and fair.”
