What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So, neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. (1 Corinthians 3:5–8, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Do you know what the secret of life is? One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean !@#$%&*. That’s what you gotta figure out.” (Curly, from the movie “City Slickers”).
And what “after all” are we? “Only servants.” Each assigned to his own task, our “one purpose“. “That’s what [we] gotta figure out.” But when we figure it out, we need to do. For “each [of us] will be rewarded according to [our] own labor. For, “what good is [just knowing]? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (James 2:16–17, NIV 1984).
My Advice – “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” (Daniel 12:3, NIV 198). Whether it is planting or watering, let’s shine “like the stars.” We may not in this lifetime know who we have touched that God takes and “makes things grow.” That should not stop us from doing our best to “lead many to righteousness.” We “stick to that and everything else [won’t] mean [half as much].
