If [the] gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god [Satan] of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:3–4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Go and tell this people: ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise, they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” (Isaiah 6:9–10, NIV 1984).
We do not know why some hearts grow calloused. With ears that can hear but not understand. Eyes that can see but not perceive. But for this (“otherwise‘”) “they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” But, like Eve, Satan has deceived them. This does not excuse them, however, “since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them…so that men are without excuse.” (Romans 1:18–19, 20b, NIV 1984). But as their hearts become calloused from refusing to see or hear, there comes a point, “that they cannot see” or hear. “[The] gospel is veiled” and they become people “who are perishing.”
My Advice – We will never know when the heart becomes so calloused that it is beyond reach. But we do know what causes it. Habitual rejection. Knowing the cause can prevent the callous, if we respond to the gospel.
