I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! (Galatians 2:20–21, NIV 1984).
My Musings – This is a point that so many overlook. “If righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!” If righteousness could be gained any other way, then what would be the point of the cross?
We know it couldn’t be, because Jesus did in fact endure the cross. “My [Jesus’] soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death…Abba, Father everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Mark 1433-34, 36, NIV 1984). The “cup” was not taken away by the Father, and Christ assented to His Father’s will.
My Advice – “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27, NIV 1894). If anyone else were to ask, “has there ever been anything that it was impossible for God to do,” the cross answers the question.
He could not forgive our sins without Jesus’ sacrifice, and without otherwise compromising His righteousness. We must make certain that “Christ lives in [us]” If not, then as far as we are concerned, “Christ died for nothing.”
