Even When

“You were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:1-2, 3-5, 8-9, NIV 1984).

My Musings – We were dead but He “made us alive. Not by works,” that would mean He was obligated. Nor because we are worthy, “but because of his great love for us.” It was “by grace,” a gift.

My Advice“Have mercy on [us], O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out [our] transgressions. Wash away all [our] iniquity and cleanse [us] from [our] sin.” (Psalm 51:1–2, NIV 1984). Through faith in Christ, He will. We must accept the gift.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
