See To It

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:8, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Hollow, lacking in real value, sincerity or substance. Deceptive, causing another to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. Which depends on human tradition, that which is commonly accepted though not verifiable. And also depend on the basic principles of this world, fundamental laws, doctrines, or assumptions.

The danger? being taken captive, enslaved or dominated by something with no value because it is false. For just because it is commonly accepted or traditional does not make it true. And there are so many philosophies masquerading as the truth, but only one that is truth.

My Advice – So, let’s be taken captive by Christ, the one truth, which is the exact opposite of being enslaved or dominated. For, “if the Son sets [us] free, [we] will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, NIV 1984). On this we fix our hope. “Though we [were] slaves, our God [did] not [desert] us in our bondage.” (Ezra 9:8–9, NIV 1984). He sent His Son to free us from our bondage.

This hope in neither hollow nor deceptive. It does not depend upon human tradition nor worldly principles. “Thanks be to God that, though [we] used to be slaves to sin, [if we] wholeheartedly [obey] the form of teaching to which [we] were entrusted…[we] been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (Roman 6:17–18, NIV 1984). We just need to make sure that the “if we” becomes “since we.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
