Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:5–6, NIV 1984).
My Musings – It seems to me, that all too often we are not “wise in the way you act toward outsiders,” that is to say, those who have not placed their trust in God’s grace through Jesus Christ. Those of us who have should “be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.” That is the only way we can “make the most of every opportunity.” For how in the world can we possibly “know how to answer everyone,” if not with the same grace and saltiness (“speaking the truth in love.” (Ephesians 4:15, NIV 1984)) that we were favored with?
My Advice – As long as we do this, we are not responsible when they reject the message. For sometimes, “though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the Lord.” (Isaiah 26:10, NIV 1984).
Nevertheless, “let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people [including outsiders], especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Galatians 6:8–10, NIV 1984).
